Texts:

Course Description: An introduction for teachers of secondary schools and community colleges to broader topics in mathematics that are not covered in the typical curriculum. The course will focus on four texts that convey important ideas in mathematics but are written at a level meant to be understood by a popular, non-specialized audience.

Prerequisite: Instructor permission.

Grading: The semester grade will be determined by a weighted average of five assignments and several reading quizzes. The assignments will consist of essays and presentations. There will be one assignment for each book read, and a final assignment to summarize the course.

Grades are awarded according to the following scheme:

100-90 A 89.99-80 B 79.99-70 C 69.99-60 D 59.99-0 F
Attendance: Attendance is not required. However, we will spend time in class discussing the reading assignments in depth, as well as providing additional mathematical background.

Note: The last day to drop a full-semester course without academic penalty is Friday, 22 June.
