God v. The Algorithm, Pt. 1

I sat down to watch a bit of television Christmas afternoon. All I really wanted to watch was Martin the Cobbler. Or maybe The Miracle Maker.

In its finite wisdom, the Roku Channel recommended the following to me:

• Road to Perdition
• John Wick
• some other hellish fare
  (I kid you not: “Hell” was in the title)

I paused a moment, eyes blinking at the strange discrepancy, wondering what on earth I’d been watching that made The Algorithm tempt me in this fashion.

God won out this time.

This time.

Confession: I haven’t watched much Roku in ages, so I really don’t know why it offered those up, though I’ll admit that a year or two ago I invested some time into, ah, “figuring out why John Wick is so popular.” I concluded that it must have been due to Claudia Gerini. But, as I say, that was a year ago or more.

Also, I recently looked up Road to Perdition, fair enough.

No idea on the other one.
